A Brief Look Into Luhan's Past

“On shows, Luhan always says that he was scouted when walking in the streets. He entered the company in 2010, managed to debut after training for only one year and became EXO-M’s ‘top’. After hearing that you must think, ‘Oh, what an easy and beautiful experience. He’s so lucky.’ But things really aren’t as simple as they seem on the surface:
After signing with the company in 2008, Luhan took his dreams and hopes for a bright future with him to Korea. What greeted him there however, was not a certain answer but rather endless waiting where one could not even see the way out.
He wasn’t like other trainees, who could get vocal and dance and special training.
He wasn’t like other trainees, who are able to at least look forward to their futures.
He wasn’t like other trainees, who, even if they are eventually unable to debut, can strengthen their skills and go down another suitable path.
He could only learn Korean, sing what he likes to sing and dance what he likes to dance; all by himself.
‘When you’ve waited for so long, you forget the reason you’re even waiting’ — this was what Luhan said. From 2008 to 2010, except for endless waiting, he did not get anything from the company. Can you understand that feeling? You left everything to chase after your dream, but your dream seems to be slipping farther and farther away from you.
All he had was a meaningless contract with the company, a contract that sounds nice but in reality is just the company’s way of hogging a small part of an extensive backup list. He wasn’t a trainee, he wasn’t acknowledged or accepted, he could have been thrown aside at any moment. And these things that he experienced in Korea were probably things he never even imagined when he left everything behind without looking back to pursue his dream.
Two years, how much singing and dancing could a trainee learn? But for him, it was just two years of nothingness.
Two years, he probably wished he was one of the trainees who could go in and out of the company freely, and he probably often doubted whether he had made the correct decision.
Two years, he lost the jagged edges of his personality as he learned what society was really like; these were probably the most difficult, uncertain years of his life.
He said, that he never felt tired as a trainee because he was doing what he loved. For him, what was really tiring was the uncertainty and the endless waiting.
He’s so lucky, because he’s good looking he was scouted.
He’s so lucky, he only had to train for one year before debut.
He’s so lucky, he can be the ‘top’ of his group even with so many other exceptional members.
People who don’t understand him probably think this way. But the reality is, behind success, there is definitely a story no one knows about.
As fans, we are thankful for his initial determination, for his perseverance from beginning to end, and we’re thankful that he used hard work to prove himself, and moved past those two difficult years.
There is bitterness behind success. Luhan was like this, and Chen and Baekhyun probably have their own stories. Don’t feel that they are lucky just because they did not train for a long time. No one really just appears out of nowhere, and often you cannot see the sacrifices that they’ve made. These so-called ‘chance encounters’, ‘luck’, will never easily favor anyone.”
